Where is the TENERIFE BLUETRAIL 82k decided?
On the climb out of Base del Asomadero and the drops that follow it to Tigaiga, just past three quarters of the effort. Kilometre for kilometre, Base del Asomadero to Tigaiga is the hardest leg of the race, nearly half as hard again as the average. It opens with the biggest climb of the course, straight up from the aid station: 481 m in 1.6 km. At 31 % on average, that is very steep. The top brings no let-up. The descent that follows is very steep too, 454 m down, and a second steep descent runs on to Tigaiga.
The ground before it goes mostly down. From Izaña the course loses height towards Picachos, and the leg from Picachos to Base del Asomadero drops 1,367 m on its own, more than any other leg, with a steep descent from Picachos. So the biggest climb of the race comes straight after its longest way down.
Half the effort is done at Izaña. The longest leg comes before it: from Madre del Agua to El Filo it is 17.7 km between aid stations, with 1,007 m of climbing. From El Filo to Izaña the ground is close to flat. Over the whole course there is more steep ground going down than going up: a quarter of it descends steeper than −10 %.
The cut-offs ask more than the time limit, and most at the start. At Vilaflor Av, the first aid station, only an even pace that would finish under 14:43 gets there in time. After that they loosen, station by station. At the time-limit pace you would reach Base del Asomadero at ten to eight on Saturday evening, already past its cut-off.
After Tigaiga the ground settles. The leg to Marítim still loses height, and the last one, from Marítim to the finish in Puerto de la Cruz, is 3.5 km and nearly flat, the easiest leg of the race. At the time-limit pace it ends at midnight, as Saturday turns into Sunday.
