Where is the TENERIFE BLUETRAIL 47k decided?
On the climb straight out of Base del Asomadero and the drop to Tigaiga behind it, well past half-way. Kilometre for kilometre, the leg between those two aid stations is the hardest of the race, more than a quarter harder than the average, and three quarters of the effort is done on it. Leaving Base del Asomadero, the course climbs 613 m, the biggest climb of the race. It gets there in 2.1 km, at 29 % on average: very steep. At the time-limit pace you start it at twenty to four on Saturday afternoon.
What comes before it is mostly downhill. The leg from Picachos to Base del Asomadero loses almost 1,500 m and climbs little: first the steep descent from Picachos, at the end a short, steep drop into Base del Asomadero. Half the effort is done on that leg. So the biggest climb starts straight after a long way down.
Over the top, the biggest descent of the race follows at once: 573 m down in 2.8 km. At −20 % on average it is very steep as well, so the climb and the descent come back to back. The descent to Tigaiga comes next, steep again and the last of the big ones. At the time-limit pace you reach Tigaiga at ten past six in the evening.
Up to Picachos, the course mostly climbs. A very steep climb comes soon after the start in Pinolere, and La Caldera is the first aid station. The longest leg follows, La Caldera to Picachos, with nearly 800 m of climbing, much of it on one long, steady, steep climb. It is also the longest stretch between two aid stations. Base del Asomadero, Tigaiga and Marítim come after Picachos: five aid stations in all.
The finish is flat. After Tigaiga the course goes mostly down to Marítim, and the last leg, Marítim to Puerto de la Cruz, is 3.8 km with almost no climbing, the easiest of the race. At the time-limit pace, eleven and a half hours, you reach the finish at eight on Saturday evening.
