Where is the TENERIFE BLUETRAIL 110k decided?
On the climb from Parador to Teide-la Rambleta, just past half-way.
That leg gains 1,433 m in 10.2 km. Nearly all of it is one long, steep climb that averages 17 %. Kilometre for kilometre it is the hardest leg of the race, half as hard again as the average, and no other leg takes a bigger share of the effort. At Teide-la Rambleta more than half the work is done. At the time-limit pace you reach Parador at half past eleven on Saturday morning and the top of the climb a little after three in the afternoon.
It is a course of long climbs and long descents with little flat. A quarter of it climbs steeper than 10 %, and as much descends as steeply. The race starts at Playa de los Cristianos at eleven on Friday night and climbs almost without a break to Ifonche. Then comes the longest leg, Ifonche to Vilaflor: 13.9 km with 1,006 m of climbing, two steep climbs on the way. A quarter of the effort is done on that leg, and at the time-limit pace you reach Vilaflor a little after seven on Saturday morning. Madre del Agua and Parador follow, with one more steep climb after Madre del Agua. There are eleven aid stations in all; the longest gaps between them are Ifonche to Vilaflor and Teide-la Rambleta to Portillo Alto.
Straight after Teide-la Rambleta the biggest descent of the race begins, steep all the way to Portillo Alto: 1,475 m down. The ground keeps falling past Portillo Alto and Picachos, and the leg from Picachos to Base del Asomadero alone loses 1,631 m. At Base del Asomadero, at twenty to ten on Saturday night at the time-limit pace, more than three quarters of the work is behind you.
The end is short and hard. Right after Base del Asomadero comes the steepest climb of the course, very steep, 347 m in just over a kilometre. The last big descent follows at once, very steep as well. From Tigaiga the course keeps dropping to Marítim, and the last leg to Puerto de la Cruz is almost flat. At the time-limit pace you finish at two on Sunday morning.
