Where is the E101 - Ultra Trail decided?
On the climb from Wengen to Männlichen, on Saturday evening, with well over half the work done.
The race starts at four in the morning and goes straight up: the first leg climbs 975 m to Gr. Scheidegg, with the climb out of Grindelwald steep. Then it drops steeply to Bort and climbs steeply again to First; not quite a third of the work is done at Feld, at half past eleven at the time-limit pace. Feld to Faulhorn is the second hardest leg per kilometre, and the climb to Faulhorn is the steepest of the course’s big climbs, very steep. From Faulhorn the way down is long: three legs through Egg and Schwand to Burglauenen, almost all descent, with a steep drop into Schwand. Burglauenen is the halfway mark by effort; at the time-limit pace you are there at ten past five.
The leg to Wengen climbs 737 m in 9 km, most of it in one steep climb straight out of Burglauenen. Then Wengen to Männlichen: 947 m of climbing in under 5 km, with no descent at all. Kilometre for kilometre it is the hardest leg of the course, well over half as hard again as the average. It is also the biggest climb of the race and very steep, 20 % on average; only the shorter climb to Faulhorn is steeper. At the time-limit pace you leave Wengen at half past seven on Saturday evening and reach Männlichen at twenty to ten.
After Männlichen the course turns down, with a very steep drop on the way to Kleine Scheidegg, where four fifths of the work is done, at ten to midnight at the time-limit pace.
The end is long and, at the time-limit pace, all of it is in the night. From Kleine Scheidegg the course climbs to Eigergletscher, then drops about 1,000 m, the biggest descent of the race and steep, to Brandegg: the longest stretch between aid stations. Brandegg to Pfingstegg climbs another 500 m, and the last leg into Grindelwald is short and downhill, steep. At the time-limit pace you reach Brandegg at half past two and Pfingstegg at ten past four, and finish at five on Sunday morning, after a night out.
